Trade You An Old Gas Station for a Donut Shop

Interesting editorial in today's Scranton Times. Link to it here => July 7th Editorial.

I find this interesting in two ways:

First, this isn't over complimentary to Mayor Doherty...
" illustrates that Scranton has failed to develop a comprehensive vision..."
This seems to fly in the face of the notion that the paper blindly supports the Mayor.

Second, the premise of the editorial is flawed in one key way: it rests on the assumption that government is the only "real" catalyst for development. If anything, the role of government in development will have to decrease over time, as looming disasters with Medicare and Social Security will force a re-allocation of government dollars. Whether we like it or not, people are getting older, people get sicker in old age and Social Security's insolvency date is approaching. The governments tax stick is going to get smaller and smaller.

So I say "hurray" for the Donut Shop. An important property will be on the tax roles, teenagers will be employed, and I'll be able to get a decent hot chocolate when I am coming back from the Viewmont Mall.

I am glad that the property will be put back on the tax rolls ... I am truly happy that something is being done with the property ... as this sits right in the enterance into downtown Scranton and well it was starting to become quite an eyesore while it sat empty ... I don't think this is a reflection (good or bad) on the Mayor ... I think that Dunkin Donuts saw an opportunity to have a business that will be seen by anyone entering the downtown from the expressway and jumped on this ideal location ... I think that they will do well there.

I always thought it was ridiculous to pay for an excellent cup of coffee, when I could go home and make a mediocre pot of coffee for free. The old Dundon's gas station has been an eyesore for way too long and I am glad someone is finally going to utilize the prime lot. It will be extremely busy during the rush hours into the city.

Better a Dunkin Donuts than a Starbucks, I say. I refuse to pay $4.00 for some pumpkin-mocha-locha-frappa-venti something or other. If I can't spell it or say it, I don't need it. I enjoy coffee too much to make it taste like something else. Just gimme a large half-caf with half-n-half any day.
